How to Fill the MHT-CET CAP Option Form: Step-by-Step Guide

Why the option form matters

Your MHT-CET percentile decides which colleges you can get. Your option form decides which one you actually get. Every year, students with great percentiles end up in colleges far below their potential because they ordered their preferences badly.

Step 1: Shortlist before the window opens

The CAP option-form window is short. Do your research weeks earlier:

• Use the college predictor to get Dream, Target, and Safe lists for your percentile and category.
• Check branch-wise cutoffs for every college on your list.
• Verify fees on the college fees guide so a choice does not surprise you later.

Step 2: Order by true preference, not by fear

CAP allotments work top-down: the system gives you the highest preference on your list for which you are eligible. So:

• Put your dream college first even if the cutoff is slightly above your percentile.
• Never put a college you would refuse to join — if allotted, you may be stuck with it.
• A common mistake is ordering by last year's cutoff. Order by where you want to go.

Step 3: Balance the list

A healthy option form has three bands:

1. Dream (top 20%) — cutoffs slightly above your percentile. Cutoffs move every year; you might get lucky.
2. Target (middle 50%) — cutoffs at or just below your percentile. This is where you will most likely land.
3. Safe (bottom 30%) — cutoffs comfortably below your percentile so you always have a seat.

Step 4: Lock and verify

• Double-check college and branch codes before locking; a transposed digit sends you somewhere else.
• After locking, download the acknowledgement and keep a screenshot.

Final checklist

• At least 30–50 preferences for a competitive percentile.
• Every entry is a college you would genuinely join.
• Safe options included at the bottom.
• Form locked before the deadline — unsubmitted forms are not considered.
