How to fill your MHT-CET CAP option form

The option form — your ordered list of college-branch preferences — is the single document that decides your allotment in every CAP round. The allotment software scans your list from the top and gives you the first preference where a seat is available for your category and rank. Everything below that preference becomes irrelevant. This one rule drives all good strategy.

A strong form has three zones. The top zone holds your Dream choices: colleges whose cutoffs closed slightly above your percentile last year. They cost nothing to list — if a seat opens, you get it; if not, the software simply moves down. The middle zone is your realistic core: colleges closing right around your percentile for your category. Most students are allotted from this band. The bottom zone is insurance: colleges comfortably below your score that you would still genuinely join, so you are never left unallotted.

Common mistakes to avoid: ordering by college brand instead of by what you would actually accept; repeating the same college with five branches you don't want just to "fill space"; listing a Safe college above a Target (you will be allotted the Safe one and lose the better seat); and leaving the form short — CAP allows a long list, and unused preferences never hurt you.
